Before you start blogging, read some other student blogs (you will find links to them at the top-right corner of this page). Reading these blogs will help you to think about these questions:
- What is a blog?
- What is a great blog?
- How do blogs work? How can you read a blog?
- What is the difference between a post and a comment?
- What is a great post or comment?
Since you are not yet set up to make comments, I am going to open a chat for us to discuss these ideas. The question for the chat is: What have we learned from reading blogs that we should remember when we are writing our own blog?
Reminder: Before you can start blogging, you need to return your signed permission form. If possible, show your adults the blog when you are talking to them about it. I have put the letter in a comment on this post.

Dear Adults,
I am writing to tell you about an exciting new project here at Crescent Town. Each Grade has chosen a big idea to explore in the different school subjects. As computer teacher, I have been thinking about how I can support this. I have decided that using blogs is a good way to offer support. A blog is a type of website where people can share information. The way that we will be using them is that teachers will write posts and students will reply to these posts with comments. The blog will be a place where students can think and communicate about their big idea. To learn more, visit http://crescenttownbigideas.blogspot.com/ .
Only teachers and students from Crescent Town will be writing on the blog. All student comments will be approved by a teacher before they are put on the website. It will be possible for anyone to read to read the blog. Students will only be identified by their first name and their last initial. No photographs identifying students will be on the blog. No personal information will be put on the blog. In order to be able to comment on the blog students will be given a Toronto District School Board email account. We will be discussing the appropriate use of these accounts in class.
Thank you for your time and support,
Hugh Cotton
